However, as the others mentioned, they receive some of the best training in the world. They know how to get the job done, and they do. After BUD/S you are always training in an environment that is made to be as close to real life as it can be. In combat the risks are the same to everyone. I would recommend not going in without going to an A-school first. Most people don't make it through training and those who don't have a rating (job code) are at the mercy of the Navy. For the last part of your question, you would be getting yourself into something that you can't understand until you have done it. I served for six years until being injured during the first Gulf War in 1991 so I understand the risks. It is a decision that has to be based on your desire and drive. Be honest with yourself when you assess your physical, and more importantly, your psychological make up and you will make the right decision.
